Terror in Perspective

What are your odds of dying in a terror attack? About 1 in 20 million !

"In the United States, a survey of law enforcement officers published last year found sovereign citizens [Other Americans] were perceived as their greatest terrorism concern". Read More...

Let me preface this my stating that I believe we do have a duty to protect all Americans from attacks by radicals. We need to keep in mind, however, that the vast majority of killings in the US by radicals are totally unrelated to Islam and ISIS, they are by our own native radicals or mentally unstable.

Our politicians don't want to discuss this glaring fact because they cannot seem to agree on a stratagy to resolve this. Rather, they choose to point to rare attacks by radical Muslims and play the fear card for their political gain. They demand a stratagy from Obama on how to solve a serious problem we ourselves helped create. They don't ask for, or reject out of hand any stratagy to halt our own more deadly killing fields.

We also created the problem at home. This has led to almost daily mass shootings of Americans by other Americans. Politicians refuse to accept any responsibilty for our "home style" terror by and against our own people if far greater numbers than those perpetrated by outside forces.

A few facts are in order to put all of this in some perspective. Since we are being bombarded by dire warnings and daily scare tactics from right wing politics, I decided to see what our danger level really is.

First, the single largest threat of death we all face in America is at the hands of our most trused citizens, our medical professionals. Medical mistakes account for as many as 480,000 deaths a year.

Here are a few other statistics outlining what kills us, mostly by our own hand. (§)

  • Smoking 435,000 §

  • Obesity 111,909 §

  • Alcohol 85,000 §

  • Infectious disease 75,000

  • Toxins 55,000

  • Traffic Accidents 43,000 §

  • Colon Cancers 41,400 §

  • *Firearms 31,940 3.5/100K citizens §

  • 2012 alone, there were 8,855 total firearm-related homicides §

  • STDs 20,000 §

  • Drug Abuse 17,000 §

  • About 105 Americans each day commit suicide. §

  • All Terror attacks INCLUDING 9/11 3,380 vs 406,496 by gun violence in the same period

Here is a list of terrorist attacks attributed to radical Muslims for a total death toll of 38.

One young American killed almost that many just in Sandy Hook elementary school, mostly children. (n) = Deaths not including wounded.

  • Los Angeles International Airport on July 4th, 2002 (2)

  • Military recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas, on June 1st, 2009 (1)

  • August 5, 2009, in Fort Hood (13)

  • April 15, 2013, Boston Marathon (3)

  • July 16, 2015,Chattanooga, Tennessee (5)

  • San Bernardino (14)

Of course any death is one too many but when we are told on a daily basis how much danger. Americans face from radical Muslims, the fact is we have more to fear from each other and from our own life style choices than from ISIS or their kind.

Lets look at how our own citizens are killing us. (n) = number killed, does not include wounded.

  • Sandy Hook mostly children (27)

  • December 11, 2012 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts (2)

  • September 27, 2012 36-year-old Andrew Engeldinger (5)

  • August 5, 2012 US Army veteran Wade Michael Page (6)

  • July 20, 2012 Aurora, CO, James Holmes (12)

  • May 29, 2012. Ian Stawicki (5)

  • April 6, 2012. Jake England, 19, and Alvin Watts (3)

  • April 2, 2012. 43-year-old One L. Goh (7)

  • February 27, 2012 Chardon High School, Thomas “TJ” Lane (3)

  • October 14, 2011 Scott Evans Dekraai (8)

  • September 6, 2011 Eduardo Sencion IHOP Carson City (5)

  • January 8, 2011, Jared Loughner (6)

  • August 3, 2010 Omar S. Thornton (9)

  • April 3, 2009 Jiverly Wong (13)

  • March 29, 2009 Robert Stewart (8)

  • February 14, 2008 Steven Kazmierczak, (6)

  • February 7, 2008 Charles Lee Thornton (6)

  • December 5, 2007 Robert Hawkins, (9)

  • April 16, 2007 Virginia Tech Seung-Hui Choi, (32)

  • February 12, 2007 Sulejman Talovic. (4)

  • December 29,1890, Wounded Knee, (half women and children) (146)

This is just a partial list going back a few years and omits a series of 2014-2015 mass killings in America. The death toll is staggering. The statistics cleary show our greatest risk of attack is from your own neighbors and friends, not from Muslims.

Number of American civilians who died worldwide in terrorist attacks as of May 19, 2014: 8 . Minimum number who died after being struck by lightning: 29

Does this rare threat justify all the political outcry? No, it plays into the hands of those who use terror. They very purpose is to create a panic in order to drive policies that prove useful to terror organizations. Their threat and real danger to us at home is very minimal but the real threat they pose is being amplified by our own politicians and media to the great joy of those who promote terror.

Sometimes we (and our politicians) are our own worst enemy, creating panic to further their own political agendas.
