Should the Electoral College elect Hillary
I'm an admitted liberal who is not particularly fond of Hillary but I am afraid of Trump. This is my opinion of course but I, along with many many millions of voters believe the electors should, on December 19th, elect Hillary.
They have that right and if they refuse to exercise it now, their purpose is useless.
Anyone who chooses to learn the history of this strange and totally American method of election can just google away.
But the reason it came to be this way is the very reason the electoral college should elect Hillary Clinton.
Alexander Hamilton writes in “The Federalist Papers,” the Constitution is designed to ensure “that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.” The point of the Electoral College is to preserve “the sense of the people,” while at the same time ensuring that a president is chosen “by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice.”
Virtually EVERYONE including most Trump supporters and nearly every republican said he was not qualified to hold that office. They said he was temperamentally unfit. They said he was lacking in qualification. They said he was racist, xenophobic and worse. The sense of the people is seen in the actual votes. Hillary has and continues to pull ahead of Trump in the actual number of votes cast. She is the majority's choice, not Trump.
When on considers the very reason for the Electoral College was to prevent anyone not qualified from being chosen by uneducated voters, one has to ask how could they in good conscience, knowing the very justification for the college, choose Trump?
Is this likely to happen? I doubt it because the electors are pretty tied to the party in power and they are more likely to honor party loyalty than the purpose of their positions.
Just as with Trump himself, it's all about winning at any cost. It would take some real guts and integrity to change their votes to match Hamilton's explanation of the reason for their position. Don't look for that in political circles.
It's supposed to be about assurances that the people won't elect someone who is NOT qualified.
Think about it. Had the founding fathers not wanted electors to be able to vote based on their conscience after weighing the qualifications of the candidates why permit them to do so in the first place?
At least TWO electors so far understand the system. In Texas a Republican elector says he will refuse to cast his vote for Trump on December 19th.
